Karpathos: het eiland waar wij wonen! Dit Griekse eiland ligt in het zuidoosten van de Egeïsche Zee. Het is het op één na grootste eiland van de Dodekanesos-groep en staat bekend om zijn verbluffende natuurlijke schoonheid, traditionele dorpjes en prachtige stranden. Karpathos is de perfecte bestemming voor wie op zoek is naar een minder toeristisch eiland en voor wie houdt van wandelen, stranden, traditionele dorpen en windsurfen.

De beste periode om Karpathos te bezoeken
De zomermaanden juni tot september zijn ideaal voor een bezoek aan Karpathos. Het weer is warm en zonnig in deze periode, waardoor het ideaal is om te zwemmen en zonnebaden op de prachtige stranden van het eiland. Bovendien zijn de meeste attracties en diensten op het eiland open tijdens het zomerseizoen en zijn er talloze evenementen en festivals om bij te wonen. Het is wel de drukste tijd van het jaar, dus verwacht grotere menigtes. Hoewel Karpathos niet het meest toeristische eiland is, betekent druk nog steeds minder druk dan eilanden als Santorini, Kreta en Rhodos. Als je de voorkeur geeft aan een rustigere vakantie, overweeg dan om het eiland eind september te bezoeken. Het weer is dan nog steeds perfect, net als het zeewater, maar het is minder druk. Mei is ook rustig, maar het zeewater is niet zo warm als in september, maar als je dat niet erg vindt is mei misschien iets voor jou. Ook als je van wandelen houdt is april/mei de periode om te gaan!
Waar staat Karpathos om bekend?
Karpathos is nog geen mega bekend eiland. Soms ontmoeten we zelfs Grieken op het vasteland die nog nooit van Karpathos hebben gehoord. Oeps! Volgens ons is het eiland perfect voor stellen die op zoek zijn naar een gezellig, romantisch Grieks eiland dat nog geen massatoerisme kent. In het laagseizoen is het eiland perfect voor wandelaars en daarnaast heeft het eiland leuke traditionele dorpjes en mooie stranden. Oh en Karpathos staat bekend als een van de beste windsurfplekken ter wereld!
Hoeveel dagen zijn genoeg voor Karpathos?
Natuurlijk kan de duur van een bezoek aan Karpathos variëren, afhankelijk van persoonlijke voorkeuren en reisplannen. We raden je echter aan om minstens een week op het eiland te blijven om het eiland ten volle te verkennen.
In die tijd kun je de prachtige stranden, schilderachtige dorpjes en historische bezienswaardigheden van het eiland verkennen en de plaatselijke keuken en activiteiten uitproberen. Als je meer tijd hebt, kun je overwegen om je verblijf te verlengen tot een week of zelfs langer. Op die manier kun je genieten van meer activiteiten, stranden enz.
Reizen naar Karpathos?
Hoewel Karpathos geen groot eiland is, heeft het toch een vliegveld en tijdens het seizoen hebben veel landen rechtstreekse vluchten van hun hoofdstad naar Karpathos. Als je zoals wij vanuit Nederland reist, kun je van april tot oktober een directe vlucht boeken bij TUI of Sunweb. Als je wat meer budget wilt reizen kun je ook kijken bij Aegean air. Zij bieden in het hoogseizoen vluchten van Amsterdam naar Karpathos met een tussenstop in Athene (meestal 1 of 2 uur, wat perfect is!).
Meestal hebben Duitsland, Zweden, Noorwegen, Italië, Oostenrijk, Israël en Tsjechië ook rechtstreekse vluchten. Anders kun je vanuit je eigen stad naar Athene vliegen en een vlucht met Sky Express of Olympic Air naar Karpathos boeken. De vlucht van Athene naar Karpathos duurt ongeveer 50 minuten. Wie gaat eilandhoppen in Griekenland kan ook met de veerboot op het eiland aankomen. ANEK Prevelis gaat via Kreta en Rhodos naar Karpathos en ook Blue Star Ferries Patmos gaat via Patmos, Kos en Rhodos naar het eiland. Het is niet echt handig om vanaf Athene met de boot naar het eiland te reizen, want het duurt 20-24 uur. Het is dus niet echt de moeite waard, tenzij je gaat eilandhoppen natuurlijk.
Verblijven
We zeggen het maar meteen: kom je voor all-inclusive hotels, entertainment voor je kinderen en waterglijbanen? Dan ben je op Karpathos aan het verkeerde adres. Maar waar kun je dan wel verblijven op het eiland? We hebben een aantal accommodaties voor je uitgelicht en er is voor ieder wat wils (tenzij je all-in wilt haha).

Venezia Bungalows
Deze accommodatie ligt in Pigadia (de hoofdstad). Het ligt echter net buiten het centrum, zodat je een rustig verblijf hebt maar toch in een paar minuten in de stad bent. De eigenaren zijn erg aardig en ze hebben een zwembad. Stelletjes met kinderen brengen hier ook graag hun vakantie door. En deze plek is leuk als je een beetje een budget hebt.
Alimounda Mare
Op zoek naar een (groot) hotel met een overloopzwembad in het centrum van de hoofdstad Pigadia (ook bekend als Karpathos-Stad). Dan is Alimounda Mare misschien iets voor jou! De prijs ligt wel iets hoger dan Venezia.
Gorgona traditional
Als je je nachten wilt doorbrengen in iets traditioneels, maar toch iets nieuws, dan is dit misschien wel de plek voor jou! Het is een geweldig appartement in het centrum van Pigadia met een prachtig uitzicht op de haven!

Let us take you through a few fantastic things to do and visit on the island. And we chose 12 things to do for a reason. This is because Karpathos belongs to the Dodecanese (the name of the archipelago) and is derived from dodékatos which is the number 12 known. In fact, there are 12 islands belonging to the Dodecanese 😉
Beaches
Karpathos has a wide variety of beaches. Whether you want to snorkel, dive off rocks or relax on a sandy beach, there is something for everyone! These are our 3 favourites beaches that we think you should visit
1. Apella beach
Apella is, I think, the most famous beach on the island and also one of the most beautiful! The beach itself was voted the most beautiful beach in Europe in 2003. Want a nice view of the beach like the photo below? About halfway down the beach, a path goes up. Just make sure to wear sturdy shoes 🙂
1. Ahata beach
This is our favourite beach! Ahata beach is SO incredibly beautiful. The water is perfect, it is a nice beach (pebbles though, so don’t forget your water shoes if necessary) and also great if you want to snorkel. In addition, the road to it is already beautiful, although you will also see part of it burnt by a number of fires in recent years.
3. Saria
Oh well, this is not really one beach, but the Saria peninsula sort of belongs to Karpathos and is uninhabited. You can get to this island by boat from Diafani or Pigadia. And as you can see from the photo below: the beaches are breathtaking. Definitely worth a visit!
Activities and sightseeing
4. Olympos
Olympos is a traditional village located in the northern part of the island. The village is known for its traditions, unique architecture, and stunning view. When you drive to Olympos and get around the mountain we always say it looks a bit like Minas Tirith from The Lord of the Rings. The village is also known for its traditional clothing, which is still worn by the residents.
These days also tour-operator visit the village with a bus full of people. If you want a true authentic Olympos tour book one with Ecotourism Karpathos.
5. Eat the best pita gyros
We know, if you visit Greece you want to try the best pita gyros on every island. For this delicious dish, you should go to Erasmias which is in Pigadia opposites the taxi station.
6. Windsurfing
Karpathos is one of the best hotspots if we’re talking windsurfing. Due to the Meltemi, especially in July and August, you have a big change on 5bft or higher. If you windsurf or want to learn the skills. This is the place for you!
7. Daytrip to Kasos island
Kasos is one of the remotest islands in Greece and is only 1,5 hours by boat from the harbour of Pigadia (or less than 5 minutes by plane). It is perfect for a day trip to see the beauty of this place. You can book a ticket for the boat called Kasos Princess. They go almost daily from Pigadia to Kasos.
8. Kali Limni
With 1215m the Kali Limni is the highest mountain of Karpathos. When you’ve reached the top (and with no clouds) you are able to see both ends of the island; it’s amazing! The hike takes about 1,5 hours to reach the top. Usually down goes a bit faster.
9. Visit Mattsson Winery
Explore the vineyards of Karpathos Island in Volada. Renate and Thom are the owners of their Mattsson Winery. You can book a guided tour (and tasting!) with them or just visit their place to have a look in the garden and to buy your own bottle(s).
10. Gastronomy restaurant (Masterchef Greece)
In the village of Afiartis, you’ll find the hotel and restaurant Poseidon. The owners have a good restaurant with an amazing view over Damatria beach. He (Dutch) is a sommelier and She (Greek) is a chef who participated in Masterchef Greece as well as other cooking programs on Greek television.
Do you have something special to celebrate or want to have a date night? This is your spot! Although it is more expensive than some other restaurants on the island, I’d say it’s still very affordable!
11. The Greek chruches
Greece is known for its beautiful churches and on Karpathos, there are a lot as well! In Kyra Panagia, you’ll find one of the most photographed churches in Greece!
12. Visit Finiki
Finiki is a small fishing village on the west coast of Karpathos. It’s very pretty and is the perfect place for a typical Greek lunch at Mama cuisine or Marinas!
